Peach
I have always enjoyed “creating”, even as a child. Something as simple as making pot holders on a metal loom was fun for me.
When I was in elementary school, I had a babysitter named Mary who would bring her knitting with her. I wanted to learn to knit, but I didn’t have money for needles. We improvised and Mary taught me to knit using two sharpened pencils. My first project was a scarf. I eventually “graduated” to metal needles and when I got older I began making mittens, hats, and sweaters.
In my early twenties, my mother-in-law, Arla, insisted that I let her teach me to crochet. I kept putting her off by saying, “What can you make with a hook?” Needless to say, I’m so glad she insisted that I learn. I started out making pillows, Cabbage Patch clothing, baby buntings and hats, afghans and then sweaters. I had patterns for baby hats but not for women. So I started experimenting and eventually got it right.
Rick and Peach
“Hats by Peach” was born about 15 years ago thanks to the urging of my mentor and friend, Marian Imhof, seamstress extraordinaire! Marian shared her craft show wisdom and experience with me and I am forever grateful.
The night before my first craft show I was pricing my hats. My husband, Rick, sheepishly asked, “Do you think anyone will buy them?” I replied, “I don’t know!”
Well it turns out they did. It was so much fun, seeing a lady’s face light up when she tried on a hat. Dear Stacy Heintzelman ran all around Seal Park telling people to go see “Peach’s cool hats”. She was my advertisement that day and I am still thankful.
I love seeing my customers year after year. They tell me how much they love their hats, how many compliments they get, and how they keep them warm. Many customers end up buying several in different colors, or they pick up a matching scarf. They also purchase them for gifts. I put an adjustable drawstring in each hat, so sizing is not much of an issue.
It’s amazing how the yarns have changed over the years. I can’t get enough of the novelty yarns. They make the coolest hats and are my best sellers. You know how the saying goes, “Go Big or Go Home!” And if you think you’re not a “hat person”, think again! There’s a hat for everyone, you just have to find the right style. I would be glad to help you do that. I hope to see you at one of my many shows.
